About us

Mission

GEMK's mission is

  • To increase understanding about how our lives are connected across the world.
  • To raise issues about peace, justice, poverty, sustainability and the environment.
  • To encourage campaigning for change where there is injustice.
  • To challenge everyone to live more simply so that others may simply live.

History

GEMK began in 1980 as the Stantonbury Development Education Centre. The campus provided a room in Saxon hall to house the new DEC. It worked along with Milton Keynes Peace and Justice centre.

In 1989 the centre was launched as an independent charity and renamed as the Milton Keynes Development Education Centre to emphasise that it was a city - wide resource. MKWDEC joined with other organisations, particularly environmental organisations, in advancing the cause of local action for global development.

MKWDEC has undergone a further transformation, as it was decided to change its formal status into a company limited by guarantee. So in 2001, the Centre became known as GEMK - Global Education Milton Keynes and had a new logo as well.

In all these 25 years it worked on different projects like Deaf children World Wide, 5Rs project, Common wealth Common Waste, Sustainable Schools and many more.
