International Literacy Day: 8 September

In 2001, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 2003 to 2012 as the Literacy Decade: Education for All. The Assembly believes that creating literate environments is essential to eradicating poverty, achieving gender equity and ensuring sustainable development. The theme for International Literacy Day is 'The Power of Literacy', focusing on the empowering role of literacy and its importance for participation, citizenship and social development. For more information visit - www.unesco.org

10 September: Eid-ul-Fitur, end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

9-12 September - Heritage Open Days, England, Wales & Northern Ireland.

Free entry is offered at many National trust properties across the UK. www.heritageopendays.org.uk

International Day of Peace: 21 September

Declared by the UN General Assembly in 2001, the International Day of Peace calls on all nations to observe a day of global ceasefire and non-violence and invites all people everywhere in the world to honour a cessation of hostilities throughout the day.

International day of peace.org provides further information as well as a wealth of examples of peace day events and activities at school. The organisation Peace One Day also actively promotes this day of non-violence and ceasefire. www.peaceoneday.org, learn.christianaid.org.uk
